How to get assistive equipment for free

Wheelchairs, standers, orthoses and other equipment are often covered by public support programs.

Short answer

Assistive devices are usually provided through an individual rehabilitation plan or disability program. If a device is included in the plan, you can receive it free of charge or get compensation for buying it yourself.

What you can do

  1. Ask your doctor about applying for an individual rehabilitation plan.
  2. Make sure the needed devices are listed in the plan specifically (with characteristics).
  3. Submit the application to the responsible public body — in person or online.
  4. If you bought a device yourself, keep the receipts and apply for compensation.
  5. A refusal can be appealed: charities and NGO lawyers help with such cases for free.
