How to set up your home so moving is easier

Small changes at home increase independence and reduce the risk of falls.

Short answer

A home should help movement, not hinder it: stable supports, clear pathways, convenient surface heights. Expensive equipment is not required — much can be arranged from what you have.

What you can do

  1. Clear pathways of curling rugs and cables.
  2. Place a stable support (not on wheels) where your child stands up or moves around.
  3. Use non-slip mats in the bathroom and hallway.
  4. Keep favorite things within reach — let your child reach them independently.
  5. Ask your rehabilitation specialist which supports (rails, steps) suit your home.
