How not to burn out as a parent

You are your child's main resource. Protecting yourself is not selfishness — it's part of treating the whole family.

Short answer

Parental burnout is a real risk during long treatment. Sleep, food, taking turns at the bedside, at least a little 'me time' and psychological support are not luxuries — they're necessities. Asking for and accepting help is normal.

What you can do

  1. Arrange shifts with relatives: nobody can be at the bedside 24/7 for months.
  2. Use charity psychologists — it's free for parents.
  3. Sleep when your child sleeps. Housework can wait.
  4. Keep one small daily joy: tea in silence, a call with a friend, a walk.
  5. Talk with parents 'in the same boat' — support groups at charities help enormously.
