Echo game: repeat the sounds

Goal

Develop speech imitation — the first step toward words.

What you need

Nothing — just you and your child · Optional: toy animals

How to do it

  1. Sit facing your child so they can see your face.
  2. Make a simple sound: 'mmm', 'ba-ba', 'woof-woof' — cheerfully and clearly.
  3. Wait 5 seconds — give time to respond.
  4. Repeat any sound your child makes with delight — show it's a conversation.
  5. Keep the 'dialogue' going for 5–7 minutes, changing sounds.
  6. Try animal sounds with toys: 'The cow says — moo!'
How to know it worked:The child repeats at least one sound or actively 'answers' with their own sounds.
