How to develop speech in everyday life
The best 'speech therapy' happens over meals, on walks and in the bath — no flashcards, no stress.
Short answer
Speech develops through repetition, shared attention and the joy of communication. Short simple phrases, pauses and responding to any attempt to 'say' something work better than long instructions.
What you can do
- Narrate daily life briefly: 'Washing hands. Water. Warm!' — one or two phrases at a time.
- Give time to answer: ask a question and silently count to five.
- Treat any sounds and gestures as conversation: 'Yes! Ball! Big ball.'
- Read books with big pictures every day — name, point, wait.
- Use gestures and pictures as a bridge to speech — they help talking, not hinder it.
