How to build a predictable daily routine

Predictability is the simplest way to reduce anxiety and meltdowns.

Short answer

Life is easier for an autistic child when they know what comes next. The routine doesn't have to be strict to the minute — what matters is a stable sequence of events and clear signals for transitions.

What you can do

  1. Define 4–6 anchor points of the day: waking up, meals, activities, walk, sleep.
  2. Make a visual schedule with pictures or photos (see the 'Visual schedule' activity).
  3. Warn about transitions in advance: 'five more minutes of play, then dinner'.
  4. Keep the routine on weekends too — it can be softer, but keep the sequence.
  5. Prepare your child for changes in advance, with simple words and pictures.
