If your child doesn't speak: where communication begins

Speech is not the only way to communicate. First comes contact — in any available form.

Short answer

A gesture, a look, a picture card — that's already communication. When a child sees that their signals work and adults respond, motivation to communicate grows. Alternative communication (pictures, gestures) doesn't block speech — it supports it.

What you can do

  1. Notice and name any signals: reaching out — 'You want it? Here you go.'
  2. Start with simple cards: 'want', 'more', 'finished', favorite things.
  3. Speak in short phrases and pause — give time to respond in any way.
  4. Discuss augmentative communication systems (PECS and similar) with a speech therapist.
