Where to start after an autism diagnosis

The diagnosis is in, and it's easy to feel lost. Here is a calm plan for the first steps.

Short answer

Autism is a developmental difference, not a verdict. What matters at the start is not doing everything at once, but building a clear support system: a specialist you trust, regular activities, predictable daily life, and support for the parents themselves.

What you can do

  1. Get the diagnosis and recommendations in writing from the specialist and keep them safe.
  2. Check what public support and benefits are available in your area and apply for them.
  3. Choose one or two clear types of support (e.g. speech therapy and communication work) — don't sign up for everything at once.
  4. Build a predictable daily routine at home — it quickly lowers a child's anxiety.
  5. Find support for yourself: parent groups and charities advise families for free.
